Geodynamics Research

Our geodynamic investigation will focus on three aspects:

  • Long-term evolution of fault zones in North China
We will develop viscoelasto-plastic finite element models to simulate fault initiation and evolution around the Ordos Plateau, and constrain secular slip rates on major fault zones in North China in a self-consistent geodynamic framework.

  • Short-term stress migration and triggering
We will simulate stress evolution and strain-energy migration associated with the ~50 large earthquakes that struck North China in the past 700 years.

  • Multi-scale faulting and fault interaction in a system approach
We plan to explore the multi-scale earthquake processes in a self-consistent physical model in order to better understand the spatiotemporal patterns of earthquakes in North China.
